Star Wars Episode VII to be shot in 35 mm

By: James Bowler

You've seen his movies for years now: Spy Game, Enemy Of The State, Domino and the newest two Star Trek films.

No I'm not talking about J.J. Abrams, I'm talking about his go-to cinematographer Daniel Mindel.

The two have worked together on many Abrams films, and it was confirmed by Boba Fett Fan Club, that he would be working with Abrams again on the newest Star Wars installment.

Not only that, he has announced at a small film convention this afternoon that he will definitely be shooting the film in 35 mm as opposed to digital.

The entertainment site reported:

Announced today at a film industry event in Los Angeles, we're exclusively reporting that Dan Mindel ASC, BSC is shooting Star Wars Episode 7 with J.J. Abrams — on 35mm film. Specifically, Kodak film stock 5219.

The Force.net stated that Abrams was more than likely dropping hints about this with comments he made while speaking at the Produced By conference in June:

"I have not yet shot a movie digitally. Film is the thing I am most comfortable with. If film were to go away — and digital is challenging it— then the standard for the highest, best quality would go away."

The last few Star Wars films were shot in digital format.

Will this have a negative or positive affect on the film? Well so far with Abrams other films, shooting on 35 mm appears to have given a sharpness to the film, as well as his signature camera flashes.
