Top 10 Unique Halloween Costumes

October is Halloween month! And with everyone and their foam finger going out as Miley Cyrus and Beetlejuice (ahem, Robin Thicke) it got me thinking. I suspect a lot of popular and sexy costumes as always from this amazing annual tradition, however I think it’s time some people thought outside the box and go as something unique that will keep the fellow party goers guessing or having a couple yucks. For some thinking outside the box is a bit of a chore, but not to fear, perhaps my list of Top 10 Unique Halloween Costumes will help kick start the brainstorming process.

#10: Eddy from Iron Maiden

Like a zombie, but ten times the badassery. If you’re looking for something that will defiantly scare the kids then this is the costume for you.

#9: Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man

Family Guy jokes aside, this not only is creative, but it will also generate some laughs.

#8: The Dude from The Big Lebowski

For the lazy Halloween enthusiasts, grow a goatee, don’t shower for a week and be sure to make White Russians your new favourite drink.

#7: The Most Interesting Man In the World

I don’t always dress up for Halloween, but when I do, I look awesome doing it.

#6: Miley’s Foam Finger

Since everyone will be dressed as Miley, why not think ahead of the curb and keep your dignity in tact by wearing this get up, and proceed pointing at people’s junk.

#5: Medusa

Medusa is one of the coolest creatures in Greek mythology ever, and I feel the rise of superhero fandom has somewhat over shadowed this amazing character.

#4: Pregnant Kif

It doesn’t seem like this poor little green alien has ever had someone cosplaying him, you could be the first one!

#3: Aquarium

Any parents that are looking for a kid friendly idea will surely buy into this splashy idea, hook, line, and sinker.

#2: No Face

Defiantly a fan favourite in the Miyazaki world, this eerie yet gentle creature will defiantly grab some looks.

#1: Hans Solo Cup

For all you Star Wars nerds that can’t resist dressing up this year, here’s a funny twist.

Cosplay Review: NYC Cosplay

A week ago I ventured down to the states, New York City that is, and my, what a trip that was. It truly is the city that never sleeps and being in a hotel directly around the corner from Times Square I too got little to no sleep during my stay.

One thing stood out to me as I roamed the streets of Times Square and that was all the costumed characters. I got excited and sure enough, a loan Elmo spotted me and my dorky smile, so I happily got a picture with him:

If you haven’t been to Times Square, be prepared to see many costumed folk. It’s like the Toronto Batman or Bumblebee but on such a larger scale. Most costumes are familiar characters to entice the kids (such as myself) like that Woody you see in the background, Spiderman, Batman, even Hello Kitty, but my personal favourite:

 BEEDO BEEDO BEEDO!

But even after all the smiles and pictures, there’s a stern look at how these people run their business. While on a city bus tour, one of the guides had mentioned that each of the characters had to obtain a permit to work there and audition to get to the street, and for good reason. Upon further investigating, attention on these Times Square cosplayers has not been the fondest in recent memory, with the most prevalent one being a Cookie Monster, shoving a two year old over a two dollar tip.

When you really think about it, just about anyone can go out to the shops, buy a full sized Mickey Mouse costume and roam the streets. Even though many of these characters have permits and are fully able to stand there for 8 hours of the day, do you really know who you are getting a photo with? Who you are letting your child stand with?

That being said, it’s enough to get me to be a little more cautious for my next trip to NYC. The last thing I need is an overly handsy Buzz Lightyear to grope me.

A fangirl's review of Fan Expo 2013

Fan Expo to me is like Halloween and Christmas wrapped into one. It comes once a year with loads of big named celebrities, merch tables, celebrity signings, photo ops, and so much more. This was my first year attending such an event and like any convention virgin I had no idea what to expect.

Except:

However, while gliding down those escalators on a Thursday afternoon and slowly seeing the sheer awesome of everything in that room, my jaw dropped. Everything I loved about comics, horror, and sci-fi was there, and I couldn’t wait to dive in.

Day One:

My mouth continued to hang open like a moron as I passed through the aisles of comics and t shirts, giant sized Lego Yoda, and Iron Man. I was like a kid in a candy store, wanting to grab anything and everything, but if there was one pro tip I remembered from reading is that you don’t spend all your money in one day. So naturally I ended up spending $75 on t shirts, buttons and this amazing Doctor Who print.

It's so beautiful, I can't even

So after my little shopping trip I decided to check out the north building to see the magical Doctor Who exhibit. On the long crowded trip up the elevator and with nothing to do but eavesdrop, I shamelessly stumbled into the conversation the young man behind me was having, and he mentioned one thing that could possibly deter me from awesome old British TV shows: Stan Lee. So after engaging myself in the conversation, I happily followed my new expo friends aimlessly to the long line for the Stan Lee Q&A.

Poor ol' Mr. Lee couldn't hear half of the audience but dammit he loves the fans. He spoke about his new Annihilator movie that has gone into production, his thoughts about why there isn't a Deadpool movie (he claims development hell), and retold the famous story of how Spiderman came to be. My Thursday night could not have ended better and the look on my face shows.

I'm pooped

Day 2/3
Friday and Saturday were big days. Not only was this my first year going to a convention but it was also my first year cosplaying, not one but two costumes. I was a little nervous, especially since I was Poison Ivy on Friday and a little worried that butthurt dwellers would take a grab at me. However walking around the floor and seeing all the other cosplayers around me I knew I would fit right in with the crowd, and no groping! Score! Cosplaying was one of the best things I have ever done. I knew people would want to come up and take my picture, but I never thought it would be on such a grander scale.

Plus I got to meet some Ghostbusters

Not just that but I felt that there was a great sense of comradery between the cosplayers and the attendees alike. I had mentioned this in a previous article, but it was so nice to not have people sneer, or laugh or make rude remarks (at least within my eye/earshot). We were all there to support each other, have a laugh, and a good time, but my main mission: Find as many Wolverines and snap a pic. And let’s just say I think I succeeded…

 He was the best one.

After getting my picture taken a gazzllion times, and walking around starving my butt off because I didn’t want to eat a $50 pizza slice, I was told there was a Marvel photoshoot happening on patio above the venue. Excited, I rushed there and waited for my fellow characters to arrive. One by one they showed up soon filling the upper deck and awaiting the fun to be had. I had only been in a handful of photoshoots done by a photographer and I must say it was very cool to be a part of something like this.

You wish you were in this don't lie.

Day Four
Day four was…well let’s just say like a hangover day for me, probably a hangover day for most. I dragged myself out of bed and made the trek down to Metro Convention Centre and walked around, picked up some comics and a regrettably overpriced poutine. But whilst munching away I reflected on my experience here at Fan Expo and compiled a list of pro tips to survive your first Fan Expo.

#1: Go Thursday if you don’t want much traffic.
Thursday is the perfect day to walk around and buy things if you don’t like crowded spaces. Granted there will still be a lot of people, but nowhere near the same volume on the weekend, and there aren’t as many guests or hours in the day, but still a good option for the light conventioneer.

#2: Bring Cash
While some vendors do support Debit and Credit Cards, others don’t, and trying to get a signal in certain parts of the building is like trying to get a Friday  8pm dinner reservation at Dorsia, so always bring cash, it never fails and won’t leave you in an embarrassing situation... unless you don’t have any.

#3: Bring Snacks/Water
Like I said before, the food they provide there is sub-par and way too overpriced, so for your sake and your wallet’s, opt to bring a box of crackers or fruit, hell go to Subway an hour before and grab a sandwich, just anything besides buying the food there. Also bring a bottle of water, it always helps to stay hydrated especially if you’re cosplaying in a heavy outfit or from being around everyone’s body heat. Water is you friend, don’t ditch it.

#4: Don’t buy everything on your first day
Unless it is the only day you are there for. Seriously, I kept finding cool shit even after I had surpassed my $300 budget on Sunday. So do yourself a favour, have a good look around, make a list if you can, and get the things you really like.

#5: Plan Ahead
As much fun as I had, I also missed out on a lot of cool things like panels, workshop tutorials, speed dating, and a lot more that I didn’t anticipate. Grab a copy of the magazine, it will tell you everything you need to know about what’s going on the entire weekend, and give a lot of things for you to do.
Overall I highly recommend coming out to Fan Expo. There’s something for everyone and it’s all in the heart of downtown Toronto. See you next year!

The Cosplay Review: Fan Expo 2013

By: Becky Čoček

Costumes and conventions go together better than when PB and J first hooked up. Yes we all remember those nerds that would go to the Star Trek/Wars dressed up like skinny prepubescent Vaders and Mr. Spocks. Remember how we all laughed at them and their silly little get ups? Well… looks like the joke is on us.

Costume Play or commonly known as “Cosplay” has become a flourishing subculture amongst today’s nerds, where anyone can dress up as their favourite character in any type of genre related to fan culture from sci-fi, to classic Halloween horror.  So this summer I was lucky enough to be a part of magic that unfolded that fateful weekend at Fan Expo Canada, and boy my first year did not disappoint!

I must say when I arrived on Thursday, the moment that escalator descended down amongst the hordes of people and stuff, I had the expression of Taylor Swift’s award show face.

Yeah that one

There was everything to take in. The people, the vendors, the mountains of unlimited merch, the overpriced munchies at the food court, (Really Pizza Pizza, $8 for a crappy cold poutine?) and of course the cosplayers. I might sound a little biased when I say that the costumes were my favourite part of the weekend, but I say this with good reason.

#1: Homemade Costumes

If you’re like me, there’s nothing more satisfying than making your own costume. Every Halloween season had me rummaging through Value Village and other thrift shops, trying to find the perfect pieces of fabrics and clothes. As any costume maker or seamstress should know, this shit takes time. Not to mention effort, detail, money, measuring twice, cutting once and above all else, patience, because I can’t count how many times I’ve messed up on one stupid part. But damn, it sure pays off when strutting around the building and you have a dozen people that want your picture. It’s something I’ve always admired about this subculture and they look amazing. Some of my faves:

Annnnd the nightmares begin

#2: Attitude and Respect

It was very pleasing to find that despite being in a crowded building, sharing the body heat of the ones around you, picking up a whiff of B.O here and there, wanting to rip off the head off the slow person in front of you and oh yeah being in your heavy, sweaty costume; most if not all the cosplayers I met kept a smile on through it all, and that’s something to commend especially in a room like this:

Or this:

This is why I starved myself all weekend

Not only that but the level of respect I witnessed between cosplayers and general attendees alike were also something to note. I’m not saying it’s all peaches and gravy on this topic as I’m sure plenty of you fan boys and girls know, but we’ll cover that story later.

#3 Unlikely/Rare Characters

If you were one of the 100,000 fans at the Metro Convention Centre you probably saw a lot of Harley Quinn, Doctors, Loki, Batman, Finn and other popular costumes there. And not that it was a bad thing either! Lots of great and amazing interpretations of almost every genre were executed! However one treat for me was seeing a couple of lone costumed folk roaming the floor with no other imitator around like Frank here:

Why am I not terrified?

...or maybe a handful of people knowing who the hell they’re supposed to be. Case in point:

Ruby Gloom and Skull Boy aka: Cutest Couple Ever

#5: Fun! Excitement!

Coming to this year’s Fan Expo was like stepping in a TARDIS and emerging two months later at Halloween, but instead of trick or treating the name of the game is to relax and have fun acting like a superhero for the day. Because come on! Who doesn’t want to be a superhero?

I’m just going to leave this right here.
