Charlie Hunnam Drops 'Fifty Shades!'

Some fans of the Fifty Shades book series were disappointed to learn today that Sons Of Anarchy's Charlie Hunnam, has dropped the film project.

In the official statement from Universal Studios and Focus Features:

“The filmmakers of Fifty Shades Of Grey and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey.”

Dakota Johnson will still play the ever coveted role of Anastasia Steele.

As disappointed as a lot of people are in the change of plans, I couldn't agree more with the following statement Hunnam made in Entertainment Weekly recently: "There are so many fans of that book and I know that on the surface, I am probably not what everybody imagined."

I myself envisioned a more tall, dark, and handsome type for Christian Grey. And while Hunnam's looks are definitely more than acceptable, I never felt he matched the physical description of Christian Grey's character from the novel series. Evidently, a lot of other fans agree with me, some even petitioned to have the role recast when the news first hit that Hunnam had landed the role. I guess said fans got their wish!

Fifty Shades of Grey was first published in 2011 and quickly became a worldwide spectacle, selling over 70 million copies of the novel series. It has become the fastest selling paper back of all time even outshining the previous record held by the Harry Potter series.

Who do you think will replace Charlie Hunnam as Christian Grey?

Viral Friday: Telekinetic Pranks and Ultimate Dog Shaming

Telekinetic Coffee

With a new "Carrie" movie on the way a telekinetic prank was pulled on unsuspecting coffee shop customers as an attempt at viral marketing. Being that the video was posted on October 7th and has since received almost 30 million views... I'd say it worked.

The video begs the question. If you were in a coffee shop and witnessed someone seemingly holding someone to the wall using nothing but their brain, how would you react?

I noticed that through the clips no one ran away. Sure, almost everyone took a few steps back with every new development, but no one actually left. They were all way to curious on how the event would unfold. One woman was even recording it with her phone. I guess our curiosity has no limits... Even if we're in a room with a raging telekinetic woman.

Ultimate Dog Shaming

This next video is dog shaming like you've never seen it before.

Pet owner of Maymo and Penny posted this video on October 8th. It hs since been watched by pet shaming lovers everywhere over 100,000 times.

If it weren't so damn funny, I'd suggest investing in some dog training... But c'mon, who doesn't love any reason to dress their dogs up as Yoda and tiny Darth Vader?

Part one can be found here.

Original Star Wars teaser trailer shows a humble beginning

Back in the 1970's George Lucas was fresh on the scene still and having just come out of his success with American Graffiti, Lucas decided it was time to take his next film out of old Americana and into the stars.

Because your next logical step from making your first popular film is to basically jump to something completely different than what got you noticed in the first place.

But it worked.

On the verge of a possible new teaser coming out for Star Wars Episode VII, the very first teaser ever released for Star Wars: A New Hope has been released.

It has a cheeseball 70's feel that mixes in with Alien, The Black Hole and possibly Tron. You even have the dude who sounds like he'd probably be a huge buzzkill at a party with a voice like that.

Now this teaser was actually released before a lot of the proper edits had been completed and the special effects like colour in the light sabers (yes your eyes aren't fooling you, they are totally white in this teaser), so it looks super low budget.

Not to mention the lighting is terrible and its grainy as hell, not like our digital, super hi-def, max sound films we're used to today, with glitzy big-name stars and fancy lifelike special effects.

When you watch this teaser you wonder, how did this become a series of films, cartoons, video games, toys, merchandise and novels.

How did this little film that looks so cheesy, so 70's, turn into one of the largest franchises, so big that it spawned five more films over the next three decades with at least five more on the way and even helped created some of the film and stereo technology still used today.

It's almost a humbling experience to sit and watch this small clip and realize that great things come from very small beginnings, and imagination has the power to create anything.

It also takes us back to a time when movies were more about the experience, the journey, it wasn't about the hipster attitude of who is or should be in this, and how your favourite story line should have been portrayed, how the filmmaker or writer screwed it all up.

We went to the movies to go on an adventure that we couldn't take in our real lives, we put ourselves in the hands of the directors, actors, editors, and we were taken to magical places we could never have dreamed of.

When those lights went down your excitement and anticipation went up and for just over an hour, your life changed forever.

Take a look at the Star Wars teaser below and maybe inspiration will hit you as it did with Lucas so many years ago.

Nemesis: Money, mayhem, and mystery

"What if Batman was the Joker?" was the question asked by writer Mark Millar (Wanted, Kick-Ass). This was also the only preface I had when I picked up a copy of "Nemesis". As it turns out, this is all I needed to know to jump head-first into this re-imagining of the classic archetype. Coincidentally it was also enough to keep me from putting it down.

Set in Washington D.C., chief of police Blake Morrow receives a business card reading, "Blake Morrow, March 12th at midnight, Flatline still counts. He knows this chilling message and it's delivery to be the modus operandi of the famous international masked cop-killer known as Nemesis.

Blake knows that he has little to no time before his city, his family, and everything he loves is a pawn in a game for his life. The book starts with a very hands on intro in Tokyo. Nemesis in his most natural element; with a police inspector tied up on the train tracks. With some classic Bond-Villain bragging, pointless destruction, and a very messy end for the good inspector, he is off to the Americas to do it over again.

The book looks very much like a good old super-hero comic with all off screen gore not only added back in but glorified. Steve McNiven pulls no punches when showing off the antics and depravity of Nemesis. From the fountains of blood to the smirk, Nemesis maintains realism while providing a cinematic feel.

I personally love the character of Nemesis. He has all the great assets of Batman: the wealth, the physical form, the pre-emptive nature, the gadgets, a cool car, even a cape and cowl, but none of the conscience. Following him is a laundry list of dead cops and civilians, and those who manage to stay alive aren't much for the better. He wears an entirely white costume, and insists on getting it covered in blood. He keeps a motorcycle in his Audi. He even has a pile of cocaine on his table that would make Scarface sneeze. And when confronted he says he's "rich and bored".

And if it isn't well enough to stain the pages of the comic, Nemesis may be bringing the blood and guts to the big screen. Screenwriter Joe Carnahan (Smokin' Aces, The A-Team) has finished the script for the currently in development Fox studios film. Mark Millar even goes as far to say this about the script, "Nemesis is one of the most relentless and powerful screenplays I’ve ever read. I was actually SHELL-SHOCKED after reading it, thinking about it for hours afterwards and discussing it with the family. As a movie, the Carnahans have crafted something we’ve never actually seen before and I feel like someone in Julia Phillips’ office must have felt when Schrader’s TAXI DRIVER script first landed on their desk. This is going to be one of the best movies of the decade."

Whether or not we get a chance to see "Nemesis" in the theaters, I would recommend checking out the book. It's four issue limited run makes for a great short read, and leaves itself wide open for another set. So get on board with the next big psychopath and give "Nemesis" a shot.

Pokemon X & Y I Choose You

As we are only a few short days away from probably one of the biggest Pokemon launches ever, I feel the need to talk about how awesome these games are going to be. Pokemon X and Pokemon Y will be the next installment of the Pokemon franchise, also known as Generation 6 of the Pokemon games.

Most of us have followed Pokemon from the beginning, and have almost grown up with this franchise. With Pokemon blue and red on the original Gameboy , your goal was to become the Pokemon master and catch and train all 150 Pokemon. Now do we still feel this as a realistic goal? Have some of us grown away from the series, as they just keep bringing out more and more Pokemon? Well I have to say to people who do feel that way to give it another chance.

This generation is expected to be one of the best since the original 150. Not only do you start the game with 3 new starters: Froakie, Chespin and Fennekin, you also get to choose one from the originals: Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Charmander. How cool is that, two starter Pokemon from the beginning and not to mention that there are now a total of over 700 Pokemon to catch, train and battle with.

You now start your adventure in the Kalos region, and as always you go from town to town collecting badges and becoming the ultimate trainer. Sounds familiar right? Well now you can do all that in full 3D. You will experience Pokemon in full 3d for the first time;from regular battles to the new sky battles, and a full 3d world to explore. Still not convinced this is the game for you?

Well it gets better with the  introduction of  mega evolve forms, for now they are restricted to certain Pokemon, but man are they cool. You can now power up your favorites like Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur and evolve them one step further.

I myself am very excited for the release of this game and know how I'm spending my Thanksgiving weekend, Pokemon X and Y on sale Oct 12th. .

Till next time, Game on gamers!

Bitten: The First Nibble of the Series

The teaser video for a new 13-episode Syfy series was released and we have all the gory details and first reactions here.

Bitten is based off the "Otherworld" series written by Kelley Armstrong and centers on Elena Michaels (Laura Vandervoort) who is the worlds only female werewolf.

Elena  thought she had left the furry world, and ex boyfriend Clayton Danvers (Greyston Holt), behind when she left Stonehaven to be a "normal" photographer in Toronto - a life she has longed to live. Hiding her secret from new boyfriend Phillip McAdams (Paul Greene), Elena learns of mysterious bodies that are showing up at the packs mansion, Stonehaven.

Now, after years of working to get the "protect the pack and man" out of her system, she finds herself dragged right back in the middle of the life she fought so hard to escape. She quickly learns that nothing can stop her from defending her pack.

Initial reactions on social media seem mixed with some saying it's a show worth howling over, some noting it seems like Twilight meets Smallville, and others still say it seems like any other romantic/drama with model-esque type characters and no real meat. Although, no matter the opinion, it seems many are willing to watch the series for themselves before placing final judgement.

The series will also star Greg Bryk as pack leader Jeremy Danvers and is set to air in 2014 on Syfy and Space. Until then, lets take a look at the trailer and some production photos below.

Doctor Sleep: Stephen King's Long Awaited Sequel

This review contains spoilers!

On September 24th, at long last Doctor Sleep was released to Stephen King fans. The sequel to The Shining was a long time coming, what with the original being released in 1977!

The story kicks back just a couple of years from where we left off. Danny is now eight years old. He and his mother (who has recovered from her injuries but still suffers from chronic pain) live in Florida. As a child, it is evident Danny does not blame his father for the events of The Shining, if anything he misses him deeply. Danny is also still tormented by the ghosts of The Overlook Hotel. Dick Hallorann, also gifted with the shining and returning from the first novel, teaches Danny how to lock the ghosts away in his mind.

We then fast forward to Danny, all grown up. He has succumbed to the same addiction that aided in the destruction of his father: alcoholism. In an attempt to get his life together, Danny begins attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings regularly and secures employment in a hospice. This is where the title of the novel comes in. Danny is coined "Doctor Sleep" because he uses his shining talent to aid patients into an easy and fulfilling cross over to the other side.

Danny ends up meeting Abra, a 12 year old girl with an even stronger shining ability than himself. She is in danger of Rose The Hat, leader of the True Knots. The True Knots are a group of sub-humans living a nomadic lifestyle that wish to drink in the "steam" of those with paranormal gifts. The "steam" sustains their extremely long lives --- hence the sub-human reference --- and is most effective when the victims they take it from are tortured to death. Many of these victims are children, since the shining is always stronger in younger people than older people.

Danny and Abra begin communicating, bonding over their shared gifts. And none too soon as Rose The Hat has named Abra her next target; not only that, she has labeled Abra the ULTIMATE target. Danny dedicates himself to protecting Abra, and being unable to seek out the help of the police, he enlists his friends from the local AA chapter to help battle it out against the True Knots.

I won't spoil the actual ending for you, you can read that much for yourself.  I will tell you it was less than satisfying.

Overall, I didn't really care for the novel. I read the first one as well and I definitely feel it is the better of the two. Not that the novel wasn't well written, it definitely was. And it supplied some chills but not the same hair-standing-up-on-the-back-of-your-neck reaction I had with The Shining. It was more of an anxious, disturbed feeling. This is probably because literally five pages into the book we get a detailed description of Dick Hollaran's sexual and physical abuse at the hands of his evil grandfather. The book is not for the faint of heart: the torture of innocent children, both mind and body, is a central plot line in the story.

I also found the approach of the True Knots strange and not really all that scary. The things they did were evil and sinister, but the general concept of their existence just seemed kind of silly to me. They breathe in their victims "steam" which is apparently really painful and usually left the victim dead. Does this not remind anybody else of Disney's 1993 film Hocus Pocus? The witches breathed in the souls of children to remain alive and beautiful. The only difference is that when the True Knots took their victims, nothing was left behind except for their clothing (oooh, I get it...it's the rapture!)

Maybe I feel the way I do about the novel because I was expecting something with the same tone as The Shining and got something completely different.

What I will say is that I found it interesting that at the time that Stephen King wrote The Shining, he was an alcoholic, writing about an alcoholic. In Doctor Sleep, Stephen King is a recovering alcoholic, writing about a recovering alcoholic. AA is the acknowledgement and treatment of addiction. The True Knots are a group of beings that feed off their addiction, and enable each other. So with that said, King more than likely released a lot of his own personal demons in writing this novel and for that the book has earned my respect. I'd give it a 3 out of 5 stars.

Supernatural Season 9: One Hell of a ride ahead

"Did I ever tell you...you hit like an angel?"

Hello witty repartee, welcome back complex story line and plot, I've missed you brotherhood.

Supernatural Season nine has kicked off and it has kicked off with a series kick in the ass, as Dean might put it.

This should come as no surprise that there are definitely spoilers after this very sentence.

When we last left Sam and Dean they were watching as Angels fell from the sky after Metatron ejected them from Heaven.

Now we've caught up with the brothers to find that Sam is in a coma, damaged badly from the spell he was tricked into doing by Metatron through Castiel, and is at Death's door (literally), and Dean is desperately looking for help from any stray Angel that might hear his plea.

Although the Angels aren't out to help the Winchesters, but rather seek revenge on their brother Castiel who was responsible from casting them from their warm and fuzzy home in Heaven.

While having a first fist encounter with one of these angry Angels, Dean is lucky enough to have Ezekiel come upon him and attempt to save him from his brother Angel's attack (although Dean ends up being the one to save Ezekiel).

The two work out a deal to save Sam by Ezekiel inhabiting Sam's body and repairing it from the inside while also healing himself as the host he has taken has left him damaged.

So Dean is left to convince Sam once again to come back to the world of the living and interrupts a meeting between Sam and Death (one of my favourite sub characters in the series).

In a very strange and ironic twist of fate Dean convinces Sam to come back from Death's clutches (many fans will remember a similar situation where Dean requested the help of Death to bring Sam's soul back from Hell's pit where he was stuck with Michael and Satan).

But Ezekiel explains to Dean that he can never tell Sam that he has been possessed by an Angel for fear of him ejecting Ezekiel and leaving them both to die once again.

So once again Dean is forced to put on a brave face and lie as Sam's memory is wiped (again the irony of the situation that was much similar to when Death had to block Sam's memories of the pit to keep him from going insane).

And now we are left with an image of what is to come. Castiel is human now, running from the Angels that want his blood, Sam and Dean are trying to find him while dealing with this new threat of Angels seeking the Winchesters to try and find the location of Castiel alongside the fact that much like when Demons would possess bodies to get to the Winchesters, there are now Angels who are floating around looking for hosts and oh yeah, they still have the King of Hell, Crowley, safely tucked away in the trunk of Dean's car.

This is going to be one amazing season of Supernatural and with the teased Chicago spin-off series being introduced first by this season, there is a lot more to look forward to.

Check out the producers of Supernatural Robert Singer and Jeremy Carver talking about this season and the teaser for episode two of season nine 'Devil May Care' below.
