The film is follows the story of five friends lead by Gary King (Simon Pegg), who return to their hometown of Newton Haven to try and complete "The Golden Mile," a pub crawl that has 12 stops, finishing up at The World's End. The group had tried the crawl 20 years before only to fail before reaching the finish. Flash forward to the present and in the midst of a mid-life crisis, Gary gathers his friends Andy (Nick Frost), Oliver (Martin Freeman), Steven (Paddy Considine), and Pete (Eddie Marsan) to head back to Newton Haven to finally tackle the 12 pubs they couldn't as youths. Soon after arriving, they begin to realize that the little town they left has been overrun with otherworldly creatures and the fate of humanity hangs in the balance.
Like its predecessors, The World's End was written by director Edgar Wright and star Simon Pegg - it also features a few of the same jokes we saw in both Shaun and Fuzz (the fence joke will literally never get old). The entire movie will keep you laughing with it's one liners, especially the first ten minutes when Gary visits each of his friends individually. And you will marvel in Wright and Pegg's seemingly flawless ability to drop curse words into nearly every line written in the script; you'll also see the familiar fast cuts, which there could have been far more of. And of course there's the famous Cornetto appearance which I actually can't write anything about because it would give away the entire ending of the movie; but trust me, you'll laugh! It will shock and surprise you, but you will laugh!
My only problem with the movie is that within the unofficial trilogy it feels out of place. While Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz seemed to be absolutely awesome by accident, The World's End seems a little bit forced. It's hard to pinpoint an example, but if you've seen the first two as many times as I have, you may know where I'm coming from; it just doesn't seem like their best work and it makes me so sad to have to say that.
And having said that, go see it. SEE IT. If you're a fan you'll laugh, you'll feel and you'll leave with a satchel full of new one liners that 95% of the population won't understand ("You ain't seen Bad Boys 2?"). I sincerely hope that now the trilogy is finished Wright, Pegg and Frost will continue to make awesome movies together - the world needs more original ideas and a lot less sequels or remakes. I give The World's End 9 pints out of 10!
Cheers!
