Mars one: More Than 200,000 Apply!

Who wouldn't want to go to Mars? But, what if you knew you wouldn't return? Apparently for more than 200,000 people, that's not a problem.

By now you have probably heard of the Mars One project that is being organized by the Mars One Foundation, but in case you haven't, here is a run down of the specifics.

The group will select 6 teams of 4 people by 2015, train them, then send the first group by 2023. They will then send the following groups every 2 years there after, eventually setting up a small community on the red planet. The plan is to pay for the expenses, which could be upwards of 6 billion, with registration fees and a reality-type show that will document the whole journey.

Mars One says they have received applications from more then 140 countries, U.S. in the lead, followed by India and China.

The spike in applicants should also be noted. Just in May the number was reportedly at 78,000 people looking for spots.

As a lover of astronomy, I can honestly say part of me wanted to put in an application myself. what about you? Are you one of the 200,000?
