Could We See a Female-Led Superhero Movie?

Anyone who is a fan of Marvel movies is accustomed to seeing the big, muscular male superheroes saving the day - and while there are of course female superheroes in these movies, none have a female lead.

While she wasn't the headliner, Natasha Romanov (played by Scarlet Johansson) was a major part of 2012's 'The Avengers', Pepper Pots (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) donned the Rescue armour in 'Iron Man 3', Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell) made a big splash in Captain America and her very own Marvel one-shot, and Gamora (played by Zoe Saldana) will be entering the universe next summer in Guardians of the Galaxy. And now that Joss Whedon is the Godfather of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (he is a full supporter of super strong female characters - just watch Buffy), is there a chance we'll be seeing a stand alone film with a female lead?

The second installment of the Avengers franchise 'Age of Ultron' will begin production early next year - Natasha Romanov will be back, and we have confirmed casting news that the Scarlet Witch (along with Quicksiler) will appear in the film as well. And with 'Ant-Man' set to enter production for a 2015 release, we can bet that Wasp will also make an appearance. In early scripts of The Avengers, Whedon had The Wasp as part of the cast, but she was ultimately cut from the final draft.

If there was to be a female led superhero movie, it could potentially be tied into Phase Three of Marvel's grand master plan, or it could be a complete stand alone away from the familiar universe. But who would be the headliner? Would it be someone we've already seen, or could it be someone who we haven't seen yet? All we know right now is that Marvel is the best at keeping secrets...but Phase Three is just around the corner!
