Hexels : A New Way to Walk (If Pixels had Legs)

By: Cait Leslie

At this point in our Internet and Digital world timeline the average person online has probably at some point or another run in to a piece of pixel art. Many of us were playing our favorite video games as children in 2D pixelled format before we even knew what a Pixel was (think old Atari games, NES, gameboy, etc).

Each Pixelled image is created square by square, but what if we could pixel..with other shapes?
A Digital Drawing program for both Windows and Mac called Hexels now allows us to do just that.

Hexels gives you the ability to create images reminiscent of Pixel art by placing custom or default shapes in to a grid.
With a very simplified Interface anyone can give it a try even if they're unfamiliar with graphics programs or how to use them. Hovering over any of the tools will tell you what they are. Don't let that fool you though, the program is capable of some amazing things!

Hexels comes in both a Free and a Payed/Pro Version ($19.99USD). The free version allows access to a few pre-programmed shapes like Hexagon, Square, Circle, and some others. The Pro version however allows you access to fully Custom shapes along with Cubes, Trixels (triangles) and other interesting features.

I highly recommend checking it out! Even if you're not an artist, it's a fun program to play around in.

Above image of the Master Sword from the Zelda Nintendo Series is one of my attempts at the program, but take a look at what others have created using Hexels!

Or go straight to the Official Website, download and give it a try!
